FEBRUARY 25 | ZINE CLUB in GALWAY, IRELAND (finally damn)
i'll be saying it in perpetuity but we are so incredibly exponentially back (in Ireland)
You can call it a comeback because admittedly it took me a little bit of time to get my shit together on this one. But, the last time we did this, (we as in I as in the royal we, I suppose) we were in fabulous Montreal, Canada and now we’re at home in fabulous Galway, Ireland. So some of you reading this may be unfamiliar with the proceedings. Let me give you the rundown.
On February 25th, we’ll be getting together at Massimo in Galway’s glorious West End from 6PM to 8PM to make zines. Seems very simple, right? That’s because it is.
Entry is free, materials are provided, and you can donate some change to us if you want to (to buy ink for the printer, glue sticks, that kind of thing) but there’s no pressure. We also accept (and are gagging for) donations in the form of any old magazines or clippings you may have because we can never have enough shit to cut up and glue. Never.
I want this event to be as accessible to people as possible. Come in, grab a pint or a non-alcoholic drink and make something cool with your friends. Or make new friends. It’s a cute thing to do of a Sunday evening. And if you’re not sure how to make a zine, no worries, I will teach you! It’s really easy! And really fucking fun.
Now, if you’re a first time reader, you might be wondering, who the hell am I?
My name is Mot Collins. It is in fact not the name I was born with but the one I started publishing zines under waaaayyy back when (2015, nobody fucking freak out). I made my first little series of handmade magazines and distributed them all over West End hotspots such as Bell Book and Candle, The Secret Garden and that one big stall in the Roisin Dubh ladies bathroom that used to have a shelf situation on it. Right above the toilet. Dyou know the one I’m on about. Is it still there.
Point is, this is kind of a full circle moment for me. I started the first iteration of Stray Cats Press zine club, a long-held dream of mine, in a gay sports bar called Champs in Montreal around this time in 2023 and had the most incredible time. But I knewwww I wanted to bring it back to Galway as soon as I was settled at home. Massimo was kind enough to give me the space.
That took a little longer than expected, but je digresse.
I really hope to see you there on Sunday! We’re working on making this a regular thing and that is all the better if you folks show up and show out. This is your chance to eschew the Irish aversion to being vulnerable and creative in public.
Leave that I can’t draw/nooooo I’m so shit/everyone here is so much more talented than meee nonsense at the door! No comparison zone! No one expects you to be good! Good is irrelevant! We just want you to have fun!
We are operating on a Do It Yourself and Do What You Want type ethos here. Pick up a glue stick and go crazy.
